Medellín time: the current time, the time zone, and the difference with the US

Medellín time is simple once you know one rule: Colombia never changes its clocks. The city sits on UTC−5 in January and in July. Every change in the gap between Medellín and the US comes from the US side, when American clocks spring forward in March and fall back in November.

01What time zone is Medellín in?

Medellín, like the rest of Colombia, is on Colombia Time (COT), UTC−5. Colombia uses one time zone for the whole country, so Medellín time is also Bogotá, Cartagena and Cali time.

Colombia does not observe daylight saving time. The clock stays at UTC−5 with no changes in 2026 or in any year through 2029¹. The US State Department frames it for travelers the same way: Colombia is one hour behind Washington, D.C. while the US is on daylight saving time⁸.

In the IANA time-zone database that phones and computers use, Colombia is listed as America/Bogota. If your phone is set to update the time zone automatically, it will switch to Medellín time as soon as it connects to a Colombian network. 02Medellín time vs US and Canadian cities

In 2026 the US and Canada are on daylight saving time from March 8 to November 1; in 2027, from March 14 to November 7². Outside those dates they are on standard time. Here is how Medellín compares in each period:

A quick way to hold it in your head: in the US summer, Medellín keeps Central time — the same clock as Chicago and Houston. In the US winter, it keeps Eastern time — the same clock as New York, Miami and Toronto.

A few worked examples for the months most patients travel:

• A 10:00 a.m. consultation in Medellín in June is 11:00 a.m. in New York, 10:00 a.m. in Houston, 9:00 a.m. in Denver and 8:00 a.m. in Los Angeles.
• A 10:00 a.m. consultation in Medellín in January is 10:00 a.m. in New York and Miami, 9:00 a.m. in Chicago, 8:00 a.m. in Denver and 7:00 a.m. in Vancouver.
• A 7:00 p.m. dinner reservation in Medellín in October is 8:00 p.m. in Toronto and 5:00 p.m. in Los Angeles.

03When is Medellín the same time as New York and Miami?

Whenever the US East Coast is on standard time. For the coming season that is November 1, 2026 to March 14, 2027: set your watch on landing and nothing changes². From mid-March to early November, Medellín is one hour behind New York, Miami, Boston, Atlanta and Toronto.

This matters for patients booking treatment in the US winter, the busiest season for dental and surgical trips from the Northeast: video consultations, clinic calls and follow-ups with your doctor at home all happen on the same clock.

04Business, bank and clinic hours in Medellín

Medellín keeps an early working day. Offices and clinics typically open around 8:00 a.m. and close around 6:00 p.m., and many private clinics also open on Saturday mornings. As an example, Colombia Care Dental in Medellín works Monday to Friday 8:00 a.m.–6:00 p.m. and Saturday 9:00 a.m.–2:00 p.m., quoting its hours in Medellín time, GMT−5⁴.

Colombia’s maximum working week dropped to 42 hours from July 15, 2026, the final step of Ley 2101 de 2021⁷. Some businesses have trimmed Friday afternoons or Saturday shifts as a result, so confirm late-week appointment times with your clinic.

Bancolombia notes that its extended hours vary by branch and city⁵. For cash, ATMs inside malls and bank branches are the practical choice at any hour.

05Sunrise and sunset in Medellín

Medellín lies close to the equator, so the length of the day barely changes through the year. In 2026, the longest days in June run about 12 hours 29 minutes (sunrise 5:49 a.m., sunset 6:18 p.m. on June 21); the shortest, in December, about 11 hours 46 minutes (sunrise 6:12 a.m., sunset 5:58 p.m. on December 31). On September 23 the sun rises at 5:51 a.m. and sets at 5:57 p.m.³

06The best time to call a clinic in Medellín from the US

Aim for weekday mornings, 9:00 a.m. to noon Medellín time. Coordinators are at their desks, the dentist or surgeon is more likely to be between patients, and there is time for a same-day reply.

• East Coast: 9:00 a.m.–noon in winter, 10:00 a.m.–1:00 p.m. in summer. Easy.
• Central: 8:00–11:00 a.m. in winter, 9:00 a.m.–noon in summer.
• West Coast: 6:00–9:00 a.m. in winter, 7:00–10:00 a.m. in summer. Call before work, or use a lunchtime slot that lands in Medellín’s mid-afternoon.

07Jet lag: minimal from the eastern US

Because Medellín is on the same clock as the East Coast or one hour from it, flying down from New York, Miami, Atlanta or Houston involves almost no body-clock shift. What tires patients is the travel day — an early departure, a connection, the drive down from José María Córdova airport — rather than the time change.

From the West Coast the shift is two to three hours, similar to flying from Los Angeles to Chicago or New York. Most people adjust within a day or two.
