Guatapé day trip from Medellín in 2026: the bus, the rock and what it costs

Guatapé is the classic day out from Medellín: a small lakeside town of painted houses, and beside it the huge granite rock of El Peñol, with a staircase up its side and a view over a reservoir dotted with islands. You can do it comfortably in a day by public bus, or let a tour handle the logistics.

Here is what it costs in 2026, how the bus works, what the climb involves, and why it is one to schedule carefully around any treatment.

01What is Guatapé, and what is El Peñol?

Guatapé is a small town east of Medellín, known for house fronts painted in bright colors and decorated with relief panels, and for its setting on a large reservoir. El Peñol — the Piedra del Peñol, or simply “La Piedra” — is the granite monolith just outside it. A staircase zigzags up a crack in the rock to a viewing platform at the top.

Most visitors do both in one day: the climb in the morning, the town in the afternoon.

02How do you get from Medellín to Guatapé by bus?

Buses leave from Medellín’s Terminal del Norte, the northern bus terminal. The trip is about 83 km and around two hours. Two companies run the route: Sotrapeñol, with fares from COP 16,000, and Sotrasanvicente, from COP 24,000.¹

• Buy your return ticket as soon as you arrive in Guatapé, especially on weekends and holidays, when afternoon buses fill up.
• Get off at the rock first if you plan to climb — ask the driver to stop at La Piedra — then continue to the town.
• Leave early. A first-bus start gives you a cooler climb and a relaxed afternoon.
• Get to Terminal del Norte by metro or an app-booked taxi.

03How much does it cost to climb El Peñol?

Since January 1, 2026, climbing El Peñol costs COP 35,000 per person, a single flat rate all year — 16.7% more than the 2025 high-season price.²³

The climb is 740 steps. The staircase is narrow in places and gets hot in the midday sun. Take water, go at your own pace, and use the landings to rest. Most reasonably fit visitors manage it; people with heart, knee or breathing problems should think twice.

Is the climb up El Peñol hard?

It’s steady rather than technical — 740 steps is a long stair workout. If you’re unsure, the base area still has views, and you can decide once you see the staircase.

04What to do in Guatapé town

• Walk the painted streets. The decorated house fronts are the reason the town is famous. Photograph the houses, but ask before photographing people.
• Sit by the waterfront. The lakeside promenade is flat and easy.
• Take a boat on the reservoir. Boat trips leave from the waterfront; agree the price and length before you board.
• Eat a late lunch. Restaurants around the main square serve Antioquian dishes.

07Guatapé and treatment recovery

Guatapé is one of the less suitable outings for early surgical recovery. The 740 steps raise heart rate and blood pressure, and the two-hour ride each way is long and winding — hard after abdominal, breast or body procedures, and long hours of sitting are something surgeons generally want recent patients to break up. After dental implants or veneers, most people are fine once initial swelling settles, though a long day in the sun is still tiring.
