Recovery stays in Medellín in 2026: recovery houses, hotels or an apartment?

After cosmetic surgery in Medellín, international patients spend days or weeks somewhere between the operating room and the flight home. That somewhere matters more than most planning guides admit. It is where swelling, bleeding or infection are first noticed — and in Medellín, many of the places marketed for it are not licensed to provide health care at all.

This guide explains what recovery houses offer, what their licensing actually looks like, how they compare with hotels and apartments, and the questions that sort a real care provider from a guesthouse with a nurse’s phone number.

01What is a recovery house in Medellín?

A casa de recuperación is a private post-operative stay. Typical packages combine lodging, meals, transport to and from your surgeon’s check-ups, round-the-clock nursing, lymphatic drainage massage and wound care. Many are in El Poblado and Laureles, the neighborhoods closest to the clinics that treat foreign patients.¹

They exist because patients from abroad need somewhere to stay between discharge and the flight home. At their best, they fill a real gap. At their worst, they are an apartment where no one is qualified to recognize a complication.

02The licensing reality

In Colombia, any facility providing health services must be licensed — habilitada — under Resolución 3100 of 2019, and licensed providers appear in the national REPS register.²³

Medellín’s official tourism guide states that one postoperative recovery facility, in Laureles, is “the only postoperative recovery facility with official license from the Antioquia Health Sectional.”¹ We could not verify that independently, and we found no official document defining a separate license category for recovery houses. The implication is still clear: most recovery houses operate as lodging, not as licensed health providers.

The context is serious. Over two years, Antioquia’s health authority inspected 80 aesthetic centers and closed 64. Seventeen people died in Medellín after procedures at irregular centers — 11 in 2024, 5 in 2025 and 1 in 2026 through May 21 — and 379 cases of adverse complications were recorded.⁴ The US State Department’s advisory tells medical travelers to research the doctor and the recovery facility.⁵

03Recovery house vs hotel vs apartment

Do I need a recovery house after dental implants?

Do I need a recovery house after a BBL or tummy tuck?

04Questions to ask before you book

Rather than a checklist of features, ask these questions — in writing — and judge the answers:

1. LicensingAre you registered in REPS? Under what name? If they say they don’t need to be, ask what care they provide.
2. StaffWho are the nurses, and are they registered in ReTHUS? Is a nurse physically on site overnight, or on call?
3. AccessIs there an elevator? How many steps from the car to your bed? Stairs are hard in the first days after body surgery.
4. DistanceHow far is it from my surgeon’s clinic? Who drives me to check-ups, and is that included?
5. EmergenciesWhat happens if I have a complication at night? Which hospital do you use, and who contacts my surgeon?
6. RelationshipsDo you receive referrals or payments from surgeons? A recovery house tied to one clinic isn’t necessarily bad, but you should know.

05Long term rentals: Medellín apartments for recovery

For recoveries of two weeks or more — or if a companion is coming with you — long term rentals in Medellín are worth considering. Furnished apartments rented by the month are common in El Poblado and Laureles and give you space, a kitchen and a place for a companion to sleep.

• Choose by distance to your clinic, not by view or neighborhood reputation.
• Check for an elevator and for flat access from the street; El Poblado in particular is hilly.
• Arrange a visiting nurse through your surgeon before you arrive.
• See it on a live video call before paying, and get a written contract.

06Getting from the airport

Medellín’s international airport, José María Córdova (MDE), is in Rionegro, about 21–22 km by road from El Poblado — 25–40 minutes via the Túnel de Oriente, depending on traffic.

The official 2026 taxi rate set by Medellín’s transport department is COP 132,000 for a basic taxi (134,100 electric, 143,100 luxury), in force since February 2, 2026 — but that rate applies to trips from Medellín to the airport.⁶ Taxis leaving the airport are regulated by Rionegro, and we could not confirm an official rate in that direction; one private operator quotes COP 120,000 to El Poblado.⁷ Agree the fare before you get in, or have your recovery house or clinic arrange the pickup. Buses through the tunnel cost about COP 20,000, but aren’t practical on your way home after surgery.

07Climate and altitude

Medellín sits at about 1,495 m, with a mean temperature of 23.2 °C, lows around 18 °C and highs around 28 °C, and about 1,685 mm of rain a year.⁸ That mild, steady climate is one reason the city is popular for recovery: compression garments are bearable, air-conditioning isn’t essential, and short walks are comfortable.
