Flying home after surgery in Colombia: how long to wait

The flight home is the part of a surgery trip most people plan last, and it is one of the few parts with published medical guidance. Two sources matter: the CDC’s Yellow Book chapter on medical tourism, and the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS).

Where the two differ — a tummy tuck is a body procedure and abdominal surgery — plan around the longer figure. Your surgeon’s clearance is the deciding factor either way.

Why the wait exists

Both surgery and long flights raise the risk of blood clots in the legs (deep vein thrombosis) that can travel to the lungs. The CDC lists this alongside infection as a main concern for medical travelers. Waiting lets the surgeon see you through the highest-risk days and catch problems while you are still near the clinic.

Planning the stay

• Ask the clinic in writing when the final post-op check happens, and book your flight after it.
• Before you leave, collect your full records in English — the CDC recommends it — including operative notes and any implant details.
