Hair Transplant in Medellín: Clinics, Prices and the Trip

A hair transplant in Medellín costs about $1.40 per graft — roughly $3,200 for 2,000–2,500 FUE grafts vs $11,000 in the US. Clinics, days needed, budget.

A hair transplant in Medellín is the shortest medical trip Colombia offers. The procedure is a single outpatient day under local anesthesia, most patients are in the city for two to four nights, and the clinics that serve US patients publish their prices per graft. This guide covers the Medellín side of the trip: which clinics publish prices, what a 2,000–2,500-graft case costs against the US, how many days to book, and how to get from the airport to the clinic. For methods (FUE, DHI, robotic) and the full price comparison with Bogotá, see our hair transplant in Colombia guide.

What does a hair transplant in Medellín, Colombia cost?

A typical FUE case of 2,000–2,500 grafts costs about $3,200 in Colombia, against a typical US total of $11,000 for the same graft count — a saving of about 71%. The US figure matches RealSelf’s patient-reported average of $11,229 for FUE, and Advanced Hair Restoration puts US practices at $4.50–7 per graft for 2,000–3,000 grafts, all-in.

The per-graft model makes the Medellín quotes easy to compare: multiply the rate by the graft count on your written plan. At Colombia Care’s $1.40, the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery’s average FUE case of 2,262 grafts comes to about $3,170. The same case at a typical US $5.50 per graft is about $12,440.

The whole trip, priced

The graft bill is the largest line, but the trip is short enough that flights and hotel add little.

How many days do you need in Medellín?

Plan on three nights. Colombia Care says most of its patients are in Medellín “for only a day or two” and fly home within 48 hours; Skin & Hair schedules larger sessions over one or two days, so book a fourth night if your clinic plans a two-day session.

  1. Arrival day. Land at José María Córdova airport (MDE), check in near the clinic and rest. Complete Colombia’s free Check-MIG form online before you fly.
  2. Consultation and procedure. The doctor examines the donor area, confirms the graft count and marks the hairline with you. The transplant itself is outpatient: you are awake, under local anesthetic, and walk out the same day.
  3. Next morning. A check and the first wash at the clinic, plus written aftercare for washing and sleeping.
  4. Fly home. Most patients are cleared within 48 hours. Ask the clinic how to protect the grafts on the plane, and leave with your records in English, as the CDC’s Yellow Book recommends for every medical traveler.

Follow-up then happens from home. Colombia Care tracks regrowth by WhatsApp for twelve months; growth comes in gradually over that year, so a long follow-up window matters more than anything that happens in Medellín itself.

Getting there and getting around

  • Flights. Five US airports fly nonstop to Medellín, according to FlightConnections, including Miami (American, Avianca), Orlando (Avianca, Frontier), Houston (United) and New York (Avianca). Medellín runs on Colombia time, UTC−5, with no daylight saving.
  • Airport to clinic. MDE sits in Rionegro, about 21 km from El Poblado — around 23 minutes by car via the Túnel de Oriente, per Rome2Rio. The official taxi fare from Medellín to the airport is COP 132,000 since February 2, 2026 (Telemedellín). Colombia Care includes a driver on procedure day and can arrange one for the rest of the stay.
  • Where to stay. Colombia Care sits in El Poblado and recommends partner hotels within minutes of the clinic. Staying close keeps the post-op morning simple.
  • The city itself. At 1,495 m, Medellín is mild year-round. If you have an extra day before the procedure, our things to do in Medellín and is Medellín safe? guides cover the basics.

FUE hair transplant, Colombia: what to confirm before you book

Every Medellín clinic above offers FUE, the method most people mean by a hair transplant. The method matters less than the planning, so get these points in writing before you buy a flight:

  • The graft count and the per-graft price. A package total without a graft count cannot be compared with any other quote.
  • Who does what. Ask who plans the case, who makes the recipient sites and who extracts the grafts. Hair surgery often involves technicians; the physician’s role should be clear.
  • The doctor’s registration. Every physician practicing in Colombia must be listed in ReTHUS, the national health-workforce register. Ask for the doctor’s ID number and look it up — our guide to verifying a surgeon in Colombia shows each screen.
  • Follow-up. How long it lasts, how it works from home, and what the clinic does if growth falls short.

Medellín or Bogotá for a hair transplant?

The prices are close. Colombia Hair Transplant in Bogotá charges $1.15–1.60 per graft, which puts 2,000 grafts at $3,200 and 2,500 at $3,600 — level with Medellín. The difference is the trip: Medellín has more clinics publishing prices in English, a milder climate and a lower altitude than Bogotá’s 2,640 m. Both cities suit a short stay; choose the clinic first and the city follows.

For the next step, start with the hair transplant cost guide, check the doctor on ReTHUS, and, if you are weighing other work on the same trip, see plastic surgery in Medellín.
