Plastic surgery in Medellín: prices, hospitals, recovery and the checks that matter

Plastic surgery in Medellín, Colombia is an organized industry, not a word-of-mouth one. The city runs a health-export cluster, Medellín Health City, that counts its foreign patients every year: 24,384 in 2025, up from 23,323 in 2024, with 29% of them from North America¹.

01Why Medellín for plastic surgery

In 2024, 10% of the health visitors Medellín Health City counted came to the city solely for plastic surgery². The city’s tourism bureau cites ISAPS figures placing Colombia ninth in the world for plastic surgery in 2023³, and it publishes its own advice for surgery visitors: check the surgeon with the national plastic surgery society and the facility with the health authority of Antioquia³.

Three things concentrate the demand here: surgeons who publish English-language prices for foreign patients, accredited operating facilities, and a mild climate for recovery. The Sociedad Colombiana de Cirugía Plástica (SCCP) counts more than 850 active members nationwide, organized in regional sections including Antioquia⁷.

03Accredited hospitals and clinics in Medellín

Joint Commission International (JCI) is the international arm of The Joint Commission, which accredits US hospitals. Two Medellín facilities that matter to surgery patients hold it:

Most cosmetic surgery in Medellín happens in licensed clinics that are not on the JCI list. That is normal. What is not negotiable is that the facility is registered in REPS, the Ministry of Health’s register of licensed providers, under the minimum standards of Resolución 3100 de 2019⁸.

1. ReTHUSThe surgeon is a registered plastic surgeon. Search the national health-workforce register by the surgeon’s name or ID number; the record lists specialist titles.
2. SCCPThe surgeon belongs to the national society. Its public directory filters by city.
3. REPSThe operating facility is licensed. Search the Ministry of Health’s REPS portal by name or city.
4. In writingA quote that names everything: surgeon, anesthesiologist, facility, follow-up and what is extra.

05Getting to Medellín

Medellín’s international airport, José María Córdova (MDE), sits about 20 km southeast of the city in Rionegro; plan on 30–45 minutes to El Poblado or Laureles, depending on traffic. Nonstop flights connect it with Miami, Fort Lauderdale, New York-JFK and Houston, and Frontier starts a daily Orlando route on December 10, 2026¹¹. 06Recovering in Medellín

The city sits at 1,479 metres with an average temperature of 24 °C¹⁰, a mild climate for recovery. Most patients recover in El Poblado or Laureles, in one of three ways: a recovery house with nursing, a hotel, or a furnished apartment. Plan your return flight around the surgeon’s final check. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons suggests waiting five to seven days after body procedures such as liposuction and breast augmentation, and seven to 10 days after facial procedures¹³; the CDC suggests delaying air travel 10–14 days after major surgery, particularly of the chest¹⁴. 07Safety for surgery patients in Medellín

The US State Department rates Colombia Level 3, “Reconsider travel”; Medellín and Antioquia are not among its Level 4 areas¹⁵. Its advisory addresses cosmetic surgery directly: “The quality of care varies widely,” and US citizens “have suffered serious complications and even died” after elective surgery, so “research the doctor and recovery facility you plan to use”¹⁵.
